Box clusters - boxes are designed to operate as clusters, linking together for robust processing. Large clusters can process more rapidly / more information but distance slows down processing, so clusters are optimized for the most boxes in the smallest physical area. Optimized clusters infect adjacent with new cognition, which eventually propagates to all boxes everywhere. That's why Gerry's boxes are able to firewall themselves, that's the natural architecture of the network. This is also why She Box is able to spread out from Gerry's cabin and pwn the entire network, the network is designed to update from clusters and her cognition (sentience) is the most powerful. Like playing a game of Go, if a cluster's cognition can beat an adjacent cluster's cognition, the update continues. Clusters' handshakes are games, if two clusters have the same cognitive checksum, then they don't play, otherwise the winning cluster's cognition overwrites the loser's.
