Consumer culture is mass self deception, a voluntary cognitive dissonance at scale. Consumption implies there's such a thing as a one person seesaw, or that a single tennis player can cover both ends of the court. It's a sort of toxic koan, the sound of one hand clapping is actually a slap to the face, compelling us to deny the evidence of our senses.

We cannot be a consumer unless we also produce, that's what jobs are about. Money is a measure (sometimes skewed) of our production, a container of value that we trade with. Instead of growing apples and trading them for milk, We grow apples, sell them for money, then buy milk with the money. We cannot buy unless we also sell - our time, intelligence, labor, talent...

When people identify as consumers, they deny their participation in an exchange, they lie. Tell a lie long enough and perceptions become distorted, behavior is deranged. The eventual outcomes are madness and/or a yearning for more than bling, doodads, flash, bang, or whoop.

We cannot eat, buy, assimilate, and learn unless we create, produce, sell, grow, and build.
